Environmental Efficiencies — Thinking Beyond the Bottom Line

Wednesday, June 18 • 10:30 am - 11:15 am • Room S115

Sustainable development is one of the greatest challenges for business today. It means more than the environment — it’s thinking beyond the bottom line to the “triple bottom line” of profitability, social equity and ecological integrity. However, for all the environmental benefits networking brings —enabling telecommuting, facilitating research and education — the fact remains that the equipment powering the Internet requires an incredible amount of power. Routers, switches and their associated cooling costs all require large amounts of electricity, which is expensive for service providers, and takes a corresponding toll on the environment.

This presentation will

  • Discuss building CSR into business-to-business relationships and, using case studies, explain how to use existing ICT technologies to reduce energy needs/carbon footprint twenty to forty percent.
  • Look at trends in high-efficiency rectifier technology and illustrate a business case for increasing power system efficiency.
  • Highlight the advances in technology that are improving the efficiency of networking equipment and contributing to an overall more environmentally friendly industry.
